Real Madrid has once again quietly fundamentally altered its attacking dynamic. The arrival of 21-year-old striker Carlos Espí from Levante UD was finalized on 30 July 2026 for a reported €25 million release clause. Moving with absolute discretion, Madrid triggered the exit clause following the departure of Gonzalo García to Fulham, securing the young forward on a long-term five-year contract through June 2031. The deal marks the highest transfer sale for an academy graduate in Levante’s history.
For several seasons, Real Madrid’s frontline has leaned heavily into fluid, highly mobile forwards who thrive when given space to run into channels or drift wide. Espí represents a stark stylistic contrast. Standing at 1.94 meters (6 ft 4 in), Espí is a classic target-man. His profile offers something distinct within Madrid’s offensive setup.
Espí won over 56% of his aerial duels during the 2025–26 season, giving his team a direct option to bypass deep-lying defensive blocks. Early Career
Espí’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu follows a rapid rise through Spanish football. After developing in Levante’s youth system, he was an integral part of their 2024–25 promotion campaign from Segunda División. His true breakout came during the 2025–26 La Liga season, where he finished as Levante’s top scorer with 11 league goals.
Espí started his development at age six with his hometown team, UD Tavernes, playing in their academy from 2011 until 2020. In 2020, he made the move to UD Alzira, spending two seasons primarily across their Cadete and Juvenil age groups. During his time at Alzira, he also earned his initial taste of senior football with their B-team in the regional leagues.
In 2022, Levante UD signed Espí into their youth system, integrating him into their Juvenil squad. On 18 February 2024, Espí made his professional debut for Levante’s first team, coming on as a substitute against Racing de Ferrol in the Segunda División. He recorded his first professional goal on 26 May 2024 in a 2–2 draw with AD Alcorcón. Espí’s performances at the club level led to his first international recognition in early 2024. He was called up to the Spain U19 squad in February 2024 for two friendly fixtures against Norway, scoring twice on his debut. He subsequently progressed into the Spain U20 setup.
