Real Madrid has formally unveiled French international centre-back Ibrahima Konaté following the expiration of his contract at Liverpool. Presented at the Santiago Bernabéu by club president Florentino Pérez, the 27-year-old defender signed a four-year contract running through 30 June 2030 and was allocated the number 16 squad shirt.
The move continues Real Madrid’s established transfer market approach of recruiting elite international talents on free agent terms. Having let his contract at Anfield expire, Konaté joins a defensive unit restructuring ahead of the 2026–27 campaign under manager José Mourinho.
Career so far
Ibrahima Konaté’s path to the pinnacle of European football has been built on physical dominance, recovery speed, and tactical maturity. From playing youth football in Paris to anchoring defenses in the Bundesliga, Premier League, and now La Liga, the French defender has steadily developed into one of football’s premier central defenders.
He made his senior debut for Sochaux in January 2017 at age 17, quickly securing a starting place in Ligue 2. His performances over 13 first-team matches caught the attention of European scouts. In July 2017, Konaté joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on a free transfer. Over four seasons in Germany, he made 95 appearances across all competitions, forming a formidable central defensive partnership with Dayot Upamecano and helping Leipzig reach the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
In July 2021, Liverpool triggered Konaté’s £36 million (€40 million) release clause to bring him to Anfield. Across five seasons in England, Konaté established himself as a trusted central defender alongside Virgil van Dijk. During the 2024–25 Premier League title-winning campaign, Konaté posted a team-leading 86% aerial duel success rate, solidifying his reputation as a formidable isolated defender.
